Our Research Chair’s Participation in the 2025 Indonesian Science, Technology, and Industry Convention in Bandung

On August 7, 2025, our research chairperson, Dr. Istie Sekartining Rahayu, S.Hut, M.Si, was invited by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) to attend the 2025 Indonesian Science, Technology, and Industry Convention (KSTI 2025) at Sasana Budaya Ganesa (Sabuga), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). This significant event, which will conclude on August 9, will convene over 3,000 participants from diverse backgrounds, including the scientific community, technocrats, industry leaders, policymakers, and members of the Indonesian diaspora. The overarching theme of KSTI 2025 is “Economic Growth and Equity Through Mastery of Science and Technology.” The initiative for this convention was spearheaded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek), in collaboration with ITB, with support from various ministries, research institutions, and national strategic industries.

In his address, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology underscored the significance of KSTI 2025 as a pivotal catalyst for propelling Indonesia’s economic transformation toward a knowledge-based economy. “The Republic of Indonesia must consider alternative economic strategies in order to no longer rely on the exportation of raw materials. Achieving mastery over science and technology is imperative for the advancement to downstreaming, digitalization, and high-value-added industrialization,” he stated. The convention is also expected to produce the Bandung Declaration, a joint commitment to strengthen research, innovation, and cross-sector collaboration towards the vision of Indonesia Emas 2045.

The KSTI 2025 initiative places emphasis on eight national priority sectors:

  1. Food
  2. Energy
  3. Health
  4. Defense
  5. Maritime
  6. Downstreaming & industrialization
  7. Digitalization (artificial intelligence, semiconductors, big data)
  8. The present study focuses on advanced materials and manufacturing.

Over the course of three days, the participants engaged in a series of activities.

  1. Distinguished keynote speakers from both domestic and international backgrounds are scheduled to present. These esteemed individuals include Nobel Prize laureate in Physics Professor Konstantin Novoselov, who made the groundbreaking discovery of graphene, and Professor Brian Schmidt, a renowned expert in the field of cosmology.
  2. Plenary sessions will address the subjects of economic transformation, digitalization, and the national research roadmap.
  3. A series of concurrent sessions will address the subjects of food, energy, health, defense, maritime activities, and advanced manufacturing.
  4. The Business Matching & Industry Forum is an event that facilitates collaboration between researchers, industry representatives, and investors.
  5. The Research and Innovation Exhibition is an event at which leading research results from universities, research institutions, and industry are showcased.
  6. The BRIN Award Ceremony is an annual event that recognizes and honors the most accomplished and innovative researchers and research institutions in the field.

In addition to featuring prominent scientists from around the globe, KSTI 2025 also engages with the Indonesian diaspora, comprising individuals who are employed at various international universities and research centers. Their presence is expected to strengthen global networks and open up opportunities for cross-border research collaboration. With an economic growth target of up to 8% for the next five years, KSTI 2025 is a strategic forum to address the challenges of premature deindustrialization and strengthen Indonesia’s competitiveness in the global arena. The convention is scheduled to conclude on August 9, 2025, with the reading of the Bandung Declaration, a document that comprises policy recommendations and research-innovation strategies designed to facilitate sustainable industrialization.
